Roxanne J. Persaud represents the 19th Senatorial District in the New York State Senate. Born in Guyana, South America, she is a long-time Brooklyn resident, representing one of the most diverse and dynamic communities in the borough.

Since being elected in 2015, Roxanne has focused on New York State’s support for youth programs and financial literacy services for the elderly. Those issues were a natural extension of her community advocacy in Canarsie and her prior professional experience as the Registrar at St. Francis College. Roxanne also brought to her senate obligations her experience as an administrator at the Registrar’s Office at Pace University where she helped students navigate the sometimes complex processes of planning their college journeys and paying for higher education. In her first six months as the 19th Senate District’s representative, Roxanne successfully piloted a law through both legislative bodies, that was signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, requiring all providers of community-oriented senior services to ensure financial literacy and elder abuse programming is available to help seniors avoid and become victims of financial scams.

Before her election to the State Senate, Roxanne served her neighborhood and south Brooklyn as a staunch advocate and community leader articulating such issues as health care, public safety and community economic development. As an avid and involved member of the community Roxanne served in a number of capacities, including:

 ·      New York State Assembly Member for the 59th Assembly District, representing Canarsie, Georgetown, Mill Basin, Marine Park, and Gerritsen Beach in the State Assembly.

·      President of the 69th Precinct Community Council in Canarsie, advocating for her community and raising issues of concern with the New York City Police Department (NYPD).

·      Commission Member for the New York City Districting Commission, responsible for redrawing the New York City Council Districts after the 2010 Census results were available for review and analysis;

·      Member of the Community Action Board of the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), representing her neighborhood’s needs for summer youth programs and after school programs with the City; and

·      Chairperson of DYCD’s Neighborhood Advisory Board for District 18, helping to advise on how best the Community Block grants program that the City receives from the federal government can better serve low-income areas of District 18.

 Apart from her leadership roles across south Brooklyn and the City, Roxanne has served on Community Board 18, graduated from the NYPD Citizens Police Academy as well as the New York City Office of Emergency Management’s Community Emergency Response Team training, and assists a number of organizations that raise awareness about domestic violence and early cancer screening.

Roxanne is a graduate of Pace University, holding Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Education Administration.
